Image via Wikipedia

BECAUSE THE WORLD IS DIFFERENT
Times, they are a changin’ and if you don’t figure out what’s going on you will be lost. Seth has a lot of ideas about these changes and how to change with them. More importantly, his solution to this change is to help you be more human, caring, interesting, and inspiring. So you can do the work.

BECAUSE OF THE WORK
“The work” is Seth’s term for what we need to be doing; the change you need to be making in the world. Your work and my work are completely different because we are different. Stephen Covey calls this “a Voice”. I call it “a calling”.

And that is why this post is here. Bourne Media cares about doing The Work. And you should, too.

So here are some links to Seth Godin’s work.

I’m a proponent of Google’s web based tools, and it all started with Gmail. I recommend it often, so I made a list.

Why I use Gmail:

It’s a core part of my web proficiency. I use the web a lot.

I love the conversation mode, where emails with the same subject are grouped together.

Gmail can merge my other email addresses into one account (using POP access).

It’s web based (I can log into it anywhere I have browser access).

It’s super fast at searching for old mail. Google is the engine behind it, after all.

It has powerful filtering so I can better manage my mail.

Keyboard shortcuts speed things up, and every little bit of speed helps.

It will work just like a local email client (meaning it works without a current Internet connection). Install Google Gears for your browser and it will sync your mail to your local computer.

It syncs mail, contacts and calendars with iPhones and other mobile devices

It gives you access to Google Docs, Calendar, Reader, Voice, Wave and a whole lot of other Google tools. (You need a Gmail account for all of these.)

Gmail integrates with Google Wave, which promises to revolutionize online communications.

It’s free, unless you want to pay for more features and support at Google Apps.

I’m a big fan of Google’s cloud-based tools, and an Apple fan, too. (Here’s a note on my Google use.)

But alas, there are more problems with the two giants working together. Google Docs does not really Work on the iPad. This will be a major hurdle for Gdocs folks who want to really make the iPad a part of their workflow. You can view docs, but not edit them. It’s a Safari issue, and the workarounds are not working.

Here is a user discussion that gets down to the dirty details.

Why do I care about this? Because Mobile devices like the iPad are the future of video distribution. And I’m paying attention.

Last month, Bourne Media sent footage via FTP to TED for a TEDx Demo that was to debut at TED India. Just when we were wondering what became of that footage, we got news of a new post at You Tube. It’s great to see some Asheville work and some Asheville faces so prominently displayed at the TED site.

BlogAsheville.com let out the news: Here is an excerpt:

In Mysore at TEDIndia yesterday, Lara Stein of the TED conference debuted a new video from TED explaining the independently organized TEDx program. TED contacted us at TEDxAsheville for material last month, and the new TED video includes images, animation and footage from last summer’s TEDxAsheville event at the Orange Peel.

Attention spans on the web are short. Sometimes you need to get to your point, then hope the viewer will stick around for more.

Here is an easy technique called “Jump to Time” in YouTube. Just add this kind of string to the end of the YouTube link.

#t=1m45s

If you say it the string sounds like this, “pound t equals number m number s”.

Here is an example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zf2F0c9R4Mc#t=2m21s

Be aware that some tools, like Power Twitter will ignore the jump string when displaying the link as an embedded video.

For more information see this TechCrunch article. You’ll see it’s also called “Deep Linking”.

This is a Video Tip. I hope you found it helpful. I’m going to try to post more soon.
